The answers to some important questions about Natural Skin Care
What is Natural Skin Care? Natural skin care products are products that contain ingredients derived from nature. Not all products labeled with the word natural are 100% natural. Many have only one or two natural ingredients in them for market value. Because there is no government regulated use of the word natural several unethical cosmetics manufacturers use the word natural while still incorporating synthetic ingredients in their formulations. Some ingredients may be naturally derived, but are synthetically processed thus losing the integrity of their natural state and therapeutic value. Here at She All Natural Skin Care we use 100% pure essential oils, Certified Organic Shea Butter, natural exotic ingredients like Seabuckthorn oil and naturally sourced Alpha Hydroxy Acids to help fight the signs of aging. We use USDA Certified organic ingredients wherever available. All of our products are between 90 to 100% natural. What are Essential Oils? Essential Oils are the liquid essences of plants, flowers and herbs. They contain all the natural goodness that nature has to offer. Used for thousands of years for their healing properties essential oils have much therapeutic value, but must be respected and used by knowledgeable experts. Their use begins with the study of Aromatherapy and extends into the fields of cosmetics and food. Essential oils contain the life force of the plant or herb thus giving it the kind of energy unavailable in synthetic chemically identical substances. After much research and study we have come to believe in the power and goodness of essential oils and use them here at SHE for your benefit.
What does USDA Certified Organic mean?
Certified Organic ingredients are from plants grown on land where pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers are not used. Instead farming is done using earth-friendly natural methods that respect mother nature. A farm must meet strict criteria to meet the certification standards set out by the National Organic Program (NOP), who develops, implements, and administers national production, handling, and labeling standards for organic agricultural products. The NOP also accredits the certifying agents (foreign and domestic) who inspect organic production and handling operations to certify that they meet USDA standards. These strict regulations are enforced all the way from the fields to the processing facility to ensure no contamination occurs along the way. Here at She All Natural Skin Care our all natural skin care products contain many USDA Certified Organic ingredients. When available we always choose organic first.
What does Fair Trade mean? Fair trade complaint ingredients are products purchased from ethical suppliers where the profits on these products go back into the community that produces them. It also means that environmentally friendly production methods are used and that no under-aged or forced labor is employed. At She All Natural Skin Care when we have a choice of purchasing a fair trade complaint product over another we will always choose fair trade and organic as our first requirement.
Why should I switch to natural skin care products? Seeking an answer to this question means that you’ve already begun to think about it. You’ve already heard and read all the news about how many synthetic ingredients in cosmetics can be linked to various types of cancers and many of the synthetic anti-aging products out there are actually aging our skin much faster. Natural skin care products are not revolutionary, they have a long history that dates back thousands of years. And after seeking out the many synthetically based products that have not worked for us, we are now turning back to nature. We want to use products that nourish our skins, not age us prematurely. Many lotions and creams that contain petroleum based products in the form of mineral oil and others do nothing to nourish or moisturize our skin. They create a barrier but do not penetrate to really nourish. On the other hand natural skin care products contain vegetable oils that penetrate the top layers of the skin to soften and moisturize while carrying the good essential oils and other therapeutic ingredients deeper in to nourish our whole body. Keep in mind that your skin absorbs everything you put on it and much of it can travel into your blood stream via the lymphatic system, therefore what you put on your skin is an important factor in your health.
Can natural skin care products be 100% natural? The only natural skin care products that can be 100% natural are products made in your kitchen from fruits and vegetables, but these products perish quickly and can be unsafe to use due to microbes and bacteria. Manufactured natural skin care products can be 100% natural only if they are completely oil or wax based and do not contain any water or synthetic preservatives, which is rare. In truth most products will have to contain some synthetically processed natural ingredients. All our products range between 90 to 100% natural. We always strive to bring you the best, most natural product we can, while keeping your care and safety our number one priority.
What should I know about Natural Skin Care Products? The important thing to remember is here at She Naturals we do not use harsh preservatives like the Paraben group of preservatives therefore our products have an expiry date. We make our products in small batches. Please use them up before the expiry date. Always patch test the product first, wait 24hrs and then proceed accordingly. Our products contain many natural ingredients like 100% pure organic essential oils which some people may be sensitive to. Please know what is right for you. Using a clean, disposable spatula to access your jarred creams and lotions will prevent bacteria on your hands from invading the product.
Is there a natural preservative? Science is working hard and fast to come up with a natural preservative that offers longer term protection of the product. Many ingredients such as Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) and Vitamin E are used as preservatives but are actually anti-oxidants, which preserve the integrity of the product as well as add great therapeutic value. Here at She All Natural Skin Care we use GSE, Vitamin E, as well as a naturally derived preservative that employs the use of ‘Hurdle Technology’.
What is Hurdle Technology? Hurdle Technology is used by companies seeking alternatives to traditional preservatives. Instead of a harsh, aggressive approach with bacteria and fungi, our preservative helps prevent product spoilage by utilizing less aggressive: “Hurdle Technology.” This creates an environment that is hostile for microbes to overcome, increasing the self-preserving environment of formulations. As a benefit it also offers skin moisturizing capabilities.
Are your products Vegetarian or Vegan? All of our products are vegetarian and Vegan with the exception of any products containing beeswax. We use natural beeswax, but it is considered an animal product.
Do you test your products on animals? No. Our products are tested by us and our family. Only when they get rave reviews and actually work do we put them up for sale. Sometimes our products are tested by our husbands. Sometimes they act like animals—not sure if that counts.
What are the peculiarities of Natural Skin Care Products? Natural Skin Care products are not your average buy off the shelf at the department store kind of products. Our products incorporate the goodness of nature while using a more natural approach to preservation, therefore natural skin care products have an expiry date and must be used before this date. Because we do not use synthetic preservatives like Parabens our products will not last on the shelf for years and years. Many large cosmetics companies use excessive amounts of Parabens and other harsh synthetic preservatives to keep their products free from bacteria and fungi. These preservatives however have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers and there exist many articles on the affect they have on hormones and other body systems while aging the skin prematurely. None of this can be good for you. But life is all about balance so…
How do I balance all the information? Learn as much as you can. If you are reading this then you are already an educated consumer. Continue to look for information from ethical sources and base your purchase of a product on quality and sound information. Always balance the information you have. Let your intuition and common sense guide you, be well informed, and finally it’s you who gets to decide if something is right for you.
